NDSM wharf, Amsterdam
Space for everyone
Parking garage with commercial strip - former NDSM Shipyard
The NDSM site was already a vibrant cultural hotspot - a former shipyard located on the banks of the IJ River in Amsterdam North. With its urban beach and river views, the challenge was to create a parking garage that could support a thriving business community and ever-expanding variety of trendy cafes and eco-conscious restaurants, while giving local residents space to catch their breath.
A place for everything
As home to many international organizations such as Greenpeace and Paramount, and a growing number of residential projects: making everyone feel like they belong was crucial to its success. In addition to accommodating all parking in the area, a large space under the parking garage was reserved for nearby residents to store other modes of transportation such as bicycles, cargo bikes and mobility scooters. And by providing more space for pedestrians, cyclists and street furniture, we were able to strike the right balance between accessibility and livability. To top it all off, we developed the roof of the parking garage into a roof garden along with solar panels to provide renewable energy to the adjacent residential tower.

"This parking garage allows us to encourage residents and visitors to leave their cars behind and enjoy the NDSM Wharf without the negative effects of cars on the street. In our opinion, an essential element for creating a high-quality environment."

Smaller footprint, more visitors
Our careful analysis of this restructuring area and the future demand for parking spaces allowed us to significantly reduce the number of spaces planned; maximize use of these spaces for the operator, while encouraging less carbon-intensive modes of travel. Less space dedicated to cars not only had the potential to reduce congestion but also noise and air pollution, making it a great place for people to live, work and enjoy all that this unique community has to offer.
